Flaky-Layer Biscuits

Another fast and tasty favorite. Five easy ingredients to give you impressive results. If you love the flaky biscuits that you can buy in the tube, you will love these! No experience necessary or that pop from the tube that you know is coming, but still scares the pants off of you when you peel open the package...

Tips:

Butter brush - to get the golden top, it's important to brush the tops with melted butter.
Cookie twist - my secret to those flaky layers is using a 2" cookie cutter, pressing straight down and then a quick twist to loosen the dough. I don't know how, but it creates those flaky layers every time!
Flavor boost - if you want to flavor your biscuits, it is okay to do so; maybe onion powder and chives, garlic and cheese, or dill. Just mix your choice in with the dry ingredients.

Oven Temperature: 375 degrees
Prep Time: 5-10 minutes
  Cook Time: 15-20 minutes
Servings: 10, 2 - inch biscuits
2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup milk
2 Tablespoons melted butter

Directions:

1) In a medium sized bow, combine flour, baking powder and salt.

2) Cut the shortening into the dry ingredients with two knives or a pastry blender until the shortening is in pea-sized pieces.

3) Place the bowl into the freezer for 5-10 minutes, meanwhile preheat the oven.

4) Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease it lightly with cooking spray.

5) Remove the bowl from the freezer and stir in the milk with a fork until the dough forms a ball. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface.

6) Press the dough out so that it is 1 inch thick.

7) Using a 2" cookie cutter, press the cookie cutter dough and twist quickly.

8) Ball up the excess dough and repeat the cutting process.

9) Transfer the biscuits onto the prepared sheet and bake for 10 minutes.

10) Remove the biscuits from the oven, brush them with melted butter and return them to the oven for 5-10 minutes or until golden brown.
